Set in 1910s New York, the story follows dancer Don Hewes (Fred Astaire), who is left alone when his dance partner and lover Nadine (Ann Miller) leaves him. Don and Hannah practice dance numbers and musical performances together as they prepare to perform in the famous Easter Parade. However, more than just a professional relationship develops between them when they begin to become romantically involved.
The plot of the film progresses through music, dance numbers, and romantic misadventures. However, Don must confront his own feelings and make a choice when Nadine tries to re-enter his life. Hannah, meanwhile, must struggle between her own dreams and Don's attention.
